Ag Economy Barometer Shows Optimistic

The Ag Economy Barometer drifted sideways in December, to a reading of 150 compared to 153 in November. Although the barometer changed little in December, there was a shift in producers’ perspective regarding both their farms’ and the production ag sector’s economic health. Producers expressed less confidence than a month earlier about current economic conditions as the Index of Current Conditions registered a reading of 141, a decline of 12 points compared to November’s index value of 153. In contrast, producers’ expectations for the future remained strong as the Index of Future Expectations rose slightly, to a reading of 155 compared to 153 a month earlier. This month’s Ag Economy Barometer survey was conducted from December 9-13, 2019 and is based on responses from a nationwide survey of 400 agricultural producers.

First Cases of 2019 West Nile Virus Found

Broomfield, Colo.  -  The Colorado Department of Agriculture has confirmed that a total of three horses residing on separate locations in Larimer, Pueblo and Weld Counties have been diagnosed with West Nile virus (WNV). The three cases are Colorado's first confirmed cases of WNV in horses in 2019.  These index cases were diagnosed by Colorado State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Fort Collins in late August, 2019. Vaccines in horses have proven to be a very effective prevention tool for WNV, and horses that have been vaccinated in past years do need an annual booster.  If a horse has not been vaccinated in previous years, it will need the two-shot vaccination series within a three to four week period.  In addition to vaccinations as a preventative measure, horse owners should also reduce local mosquito populations and their possible breeding areas. Recommendations include removing stagnant water sources, keeping animals inside during t...

Industrial Hemp in Colorado Progressing

    Duane Sinning, Assistant Director of Plant Industries with CDA and oversees the industrial hemp program. Colorado has a voluntary industrial hemp program that allows growers to apply for registration. This, which has been around since 2014. Eighty-five hundred acres and 1.1 million square feet of indoor acres have been registered for 2016. Locations are scattered throughout the mostly in Ag areas. Sinning adds that because of the growth, the CDA has went from two part-time employees to three full time employees. Two handle the 350 -plus registrations and and one that handles the seed certifications program of industrial hemp. Challenges for registrants have included banking issues since hemp was federally illegal. Furthermore, they have had issues importing and exporting seed and trying to get questions answered from federal agencies because it is still illegal federally.
